Occasional ramblings from a rambling journalist

Aafno FM Dadeldhura

Here’s a snapshot of the work we’ve been involved in in Dadeldura, Nepal. A remote mountainous region where we work in partnership with Human Development & Community Services to provide a community FM station, seeking to tackle the needs and problems in the region.

    Aafno FM Okhaldunga

Good news from Nepal! Our community radio station in Okhaldunga is now on air for six hours a day.

Now Okhaldunga is linked into a network of community radio broadcasters in Nepal by satellite. Listeners to Aafno FM will now be able to hear news of Nepal through the Community Information Network. We will also soon be able to carry news from the BBC Nepali service which is repackaged for the local audience.

By connecting the 105 community radio stations of Nepal into a single satellite network, the Community Information Network (CIN) provides an opportunity for other stations to share information and dialogue.

Working together with HDCS on the CoRIN Project (Community Radio Initiative in Nepal), Co-ordinator Vijay believes the news will be a big attraction and draw in listeners.

With some of the highest mountains in the world in Nepal, local community radio stations are often located in remote areas. So opportunities for receiving or sharing information are limited. The internet is not widely available.

HDCS’s first radio station in Dadeldhura is closely linked to the local hospital, and both there and in Okhaldunga, broadcasting on health awareness issues is a key part of the community radio service.

History was made in the western Nepali town of Dadeldhura yesterday (Saturday 14th June 2008) when Aafno Radio, or “My Radio” 104.8 FM, went on air at 7pm local time for two hours.  This is the town’s first community radio station.  Congratulations to the team for pulling this off so quickly after the workshop in May.  The picture shows a panoramic view from the transmitting site (click on image to enlarge).  Dadeldhura is the first community radio station which is part of the CoRIN network (Community Radio Initiatve for Nepal) linked to the work of HDCS (Human Development and Community Services).

  • Community Radio Workshop Nepal

Twelve highly motivated Nepalis from different parts of the country have just completed a two-week forray into the wonderful world of community radio.  For most, this was the first time they’d laid their hands on a computer let alone made a radio programme.  Yet by the end of the workshop, all of them had successfully scripted, interviewed, recorded and edited their first radio programmes which were then broadcast via a  Chrysolite “suitcase studio”.
